KUCHING: The Sarawak government is taking serious steps to cater to the needs of media practitioners covering the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA), which will take place from August 17 to 24.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information, and Sarawak Public Communications Unit – UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol, said they are currently receiving feedback from the media regarding the challenges they face, including travel issues.

“These matters are crucial in our efforts to ensure that all necessities for media practitioners are adequately provided.

“We are also still receiving feedback, including travel issues, and will share information with them regarding flights, buses, and other related matters,” he said.

He stated this when met by reporters after officiating at the Kuching Pickleball League at MUSC Pickleball Arena here.

Clarifying the provision of transportation, Abdullah mentioned that UKAS is only responsible for managing the media centre and does not have the authority to make decisions regarding logistics.

“However, if there is an urgent need, it might be brought to the Supreme Council for consideration,” he added.

He also acknowledged that there would be challenges in coverage as the media centre is spread across nine locations: Kuching, Sri Aman, Kota Samarahan, Serian, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, and Miri.

“We are aware of the logistical challenges and also need to ensure good internet access, in line with the directives of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,” he emphasised.

Earlier, he also announced that the main media launch would be held here and would be officiated by the Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, in the near future.
