KUCHING, May 20: A group of house buyers are urging the Sarawak government to take over the sick Taman Greenwood housing project in Matang here.

The development of the said project started back in 2014, and many of the purchasers who bought the houses signed the Sale and Purchase Agreements (SPAs) in the same year.

However, after ten years, the developer has still not completed the houses.

Leaving them with no choice, they turned to Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen for help yesterday (May 19).

Chong (left) speaks to the house purchasers at the Taman Greenwood project site.

In a statement today, Chong explained that since the houses were about 90 per cent completed, it means that the loans of the purchasers from banks would have been released up to about 90 per cent.

“In other words, the house purchasers are compelled to pay their loan instalments while not having the benefit of staying in the houses.

“Many of them indicated that while paying the interest on the housing loans, they are also paying rental for their accommodation. That is double (the) expenses for their housing needs.

“These purchasers are low-income earners, some are lower-grade government servants. The houses they bought are single-storey houses. These houses were supposed to be their dream houses but as it turns out, so much the dream have become nightmare,” he said.

Chong, who is also Stampin MP and Padungan assemblyman, further claimed that some of the purchasers have previously sought the help of the Sarawak Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG) but to no avail.

Thus, on behalf of the purchasers, Chong urged the Sarawak government to intervene and undertake the completion of the housing project.

“Otherwise, the house purchasers are left at the mercy of the errant developer.

“As the Government of the day, it is the Government’s responsibility to come forward during such time of distress to help the purchasers,” he added. — DayakDaily
