KUCHING: The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in Canada is ready to assist Sarawak in the development of the aerospace industry particularly in the field of aviation.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, said this development follows his visit, along with a delegation from his ministry, to Canada last year.

“After our discussion with the Secretary-General of ICAO Juan Carlos Salazar, he expressed that they are ready to assist Sarawak if needed,” he said.

He stated this during the opening of the Sarawak Aviation Safety Talk 2024 Southern Region, here on Tuesday (Aug 13).

Additionally, he mentioned that his ministry has been tasked with leading the aviation sector in Sarawak’s efforts to become an aerospace hub in the country.

“This is where we need a lot of input and currently my ministry has already provided input to our training centre in Sarawak, such as the Centre for Technical Excellence (Centexs), and we are also working with i-CATS University to establish our training centre to produce aircrew and aircraft technicians.

“Developing the aerospace industry requires many technical experts, and we need to look into this,” he added.

He ]stated that the Ministry needs support particularly from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM), and also from everyone involved in the aerospace industry.

“They can use their experience to help Sarawak draft a roadmap for the development of the aerospace industry,” he added.
