Illegal lottery: Foreign labourer in Miri jailed one month, fined RM20,000

MIRI (July 10) The Magistrates’ Court here today sentenced an Indonesian labourer to one month in jail and fined him RM20,000 in default another month in prison for his involvement in illegal lottery activities.

Magistrate Randu Rangen convicted Rohani, 43, on his guilty plea to a charge framed under Section 4A(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

The Section provides for a fine of between RM20,000 and RM200,000 and imprisonment not exceeding five years, upon conviction.

Rohani committed the offence by the roadside of a shopping centre in Tudan here at around 6.45pm on May 5, 2024.

In mitigation, the accused pleaded for leniency as he is married with two children.

Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman prosecuted, while the accused was unrepresented.
