Immigration sweep nets 62

MIRI: The Immigration Enforcement Unit (UPI) here concluded a rigorous two-day operation on Friday, resulting in the detainment of 62 individuals, 29 of whom are foreigners found violating immigration laws.

The operation, which began on May 9, was initiated after extensive intelligence gathering and numerous public complaints. It targeted various establishments including food services, grocery stores, oil palm processing plants, residential accommodations and construction sites here.

“During the crackdown, 21 men, 5 women, and 3 children were detained for overstaying their visas or lacking proper documentation to remain in Malaysia,” said the UPI on its Facebook page today (May 11).

On the first day, code-named OPS SELERA, seven employees at a local eatery here — a recognised ‘hotspot’ for immigration violations — were detained.

The second day witnessed the arrest of 22 more individuals, primarily Indonesians and Filipinos, who were caught working during the raid.

“All cases are currently under investigation in accordance with Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, along with Regulation 11(7)(a) of the Immigration Regulations 1963,” it added.

The Malaysian Immigration Department in Sarawak has reiterated its dedication to intensify efforts to detect and arrest foreigners who are in breach of immigration laws, especially in ‘hotspot’ areas.

The department also stressed the importance for foreign workers in Sarawak to adhere strictly to legal procedures by securing valid and appropriate work visit passes. This compliance is crucial to avoid legal issues and ensure their comprehensive welfare protection.
