KUCHING: The Borneo Craft Global Expo & Conference 2024 (BCG2024) is set to take place from Nov 27 to Dec 1 at the Kuching Waterfront.

The inaugural event, under the tagline “Globalising Local,” aims to celebrate not just Borneo’s rich cultural heritage and showcase its diverse traditional crafts, but will also display crafts from Brunei, Cambodia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the BCG2024 is organised by the Sarawak Craft Council (SCC), supported by his ministry and Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak).

“Sarawak is a land rich in cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship, and the BCG2024 presents a unique opportunity to showcase our unique talents and skills to the world.

“By bringing together artisans, craftsmen and craftswomen, designers, and craftpreneurs from Sarawak, Malaysia, and beyond, we have the chance to elevate our crafts industry and shine a spotlight on the beauty and artistry of our local creations,” he said in a press statement yesterday (Aug 6).

With the BCG2024 being a five-day event, Abdul Karim said it provides a platform for local crafters to showcase their products, exchange knowledge and skills with international crafters, and explore long-term collaboration opportunities.

“Event highlights include a conference and various workshops exclusive to conference delegates, the MasterCraft Challenge open to all crafters, an exhibition cum market open to public, the Malaysia Book of Records for the longest gathering of beadmakers making bead crafts, a street party open to public, and field trips and cultural tours exclusive to conference delegates,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister for Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan who is also the organisaing chairman said over 50,000 expo visitors, 300 conference delegates, 500 exhibitors, and 30 speakers are expected to attend the BCG2024.

He said the BCG2024 promises to be an enriching experience for all attendees, offering a unique blend of cultural celebration, skill enhancement, and international collaboration.

“We hope for the public to join us in Kuching for this inaugural event and be part of the globalisation of local crafts.

“From immersive artisan demonstrations to interactive workshops and cultural performances, there will be something for everyone to enjoy and appreciate at Borneo Craft Global.

“Whether you are a seasoned collector, a curious traveller, or simply someone looking to experience the magic of craftsmanship, this expo has been mindfully crafted to cater to all interests and passions,” he said.
