SIBU (Dec 20): The Sarawak government remains firmly committed to strengthening education as a key pillar of the state’s development agenda, with a strong focus on ensuring fair, inclusive and quality access to learning for all students regardless of their socio-economic background.
Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said this commitment reflects the state’s belief that education is the most important long-term investment for Sarawak’s future.
“Education is the most crucial investment for Sarawak’s future,” he said in his speech, which was read by the Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Sayed Azmee Wan Junaidi at the Sarawak Foundation International Secondary School (YSISS) Sibu Student Excellence Awards 2025 here on Friday.
Dr Annuar said recognition programmes such as the Student Excellence Awards play an important role not only in celebrating academic achievements but also in acknowledging students’ discipline, character, perseverance and overall effort throughout their learning journey.
He noted that the achievements recognised during the ceremony were the result of close cooperation between students, the unwavering dedication of teachers, and strong support from parents and school management.
“The success of our students today is a clear reflection of the tireless efforts of teachers in the classroom,” he said, expressing appreciation for the professionalism, patience and commitment of educators in nurturing students who excel academically while upholding strong moral values.
Dr Annuar also highlighted YSISS Sibu’s role as a strategic partner of the state government, particularly through initiatives such as the implementation of Sarawak Foundation Laptop Assistance Programme.
Under the programme, 53 out of 94 YSISS Sibu students received laptops, comprising students from the B40 group as well as those categorised as M40.
According to Dr Annuar, the assistance goes beyond the provision of devices and represents a long-term investment to ensure students are not left behind in an increasingly digital learning environment.
“In today’s education landscape, access to learning devices is no longer a luxury but a necessity,” he said, adding that the initiative would help students learn more effectively, enhance digital skills and better prepare for higher education and future careers.
He congratulated all award recipients while reminding other students not to feel discouraged if they had yet to receive recognition.
“Success is not measured solely by awards, but by consistent effort, resilience and the determination to keep improving,” he said.
