Indonesian man in Miri jailed eight months for drug possession

MIRI (July 10): The Magistrates’ Court here today sentenced an Indonesian man to eight months in jail after he pleaded guilty to possessing drugs in February this year.

Magistrate Randu Rangen, who meted out the sentence against Arvi Mulqi Aziz, 30 of Cianjur Indonesia, also ordered it to run from date of arrest, which was on Feb 20 this year.

Arvi Mulqi was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act.

The Section carries a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment up to five years or both, upon conviction.

Arvi Mulqi, who worked as a lorry driver, was found in possession of methamphetamine weighing 0.40g at an area in Morsjaya at around 4.30pm on Feb 20 this year.

In mitigation, he pleaded for leniency as it was his first offence and that he is a widower with a child.

Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman prosecuted the case, while Arvi Mulqi was unrepresented by a legal counsel.
