KUCHING: “Raise the Jalur Gemilang. It symbolises that we are Malaysians,” said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

He emphasised that the spirit of an independent Malaysia should not only burn bright during the National Day celebrations but must be instilled daily among the people.

Under the theme of the Madani government, ‘Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka,’ he said that the spirit of independence is a testament to the commitment to nation-building with unity and solidarity.

As such, he said that love for the country should begin with raising the Jalur Gemilang, Malaysia’s national flag.

“If we go abroad, especially to the United States of America (USA), with its diverse backgrounds, they don’t wait for their national day to raise their country’s flag. In fact, every home always has their national flag raised.

“During the Olympics, we feel proud when we see our flag raised on the global stage. If that makes us feel proud, why can’t we raise it at our homes?

“Don’t wait for the National Day or Malaysia Day. Raise it. Show that we are Malaysians who are proud to be citizens,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the Raising The Jalur Gemilang ceremony in conjunction with National Month at the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Convention Centre here today.

At the event, more than 1,000 participants attended to celebrate the occasion, including students from nearby schools, local MADANI community members, and staff from the Sarawak Information Department.

In light of this, Fadillah, who is the Petra Jaya MP, urged attendees to return with the spirit of independence and to raise the Jalur Gemilang at their homes and offices.

“It is crucial for us to ignite the spirit of unity among us. Here in Sarawak, we have slogans like ‘Segulai Sejalai,’ ‘Sejiwa Senada,’ and many others.

“That is the foundation for us to build a nation, regardless of background. We must love one another, help each other, and care for one another. To together build a society and nation,” he added.
