MIRI (Sept 4): The search for a suitable location for the approved RM18-million jetty project at Kampung Kuala Sibuti near here is still on-going, as its placement is a critical factor in boosting the socio-economic status of the local community.
In stating this, Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Sarawak Datuk Rosey Yunus said the first site visit was conducted by several government agencies in July, prior to discussions held with villagers regarding the proposed construction of the jetty.
“Today (yesterday) was the second site visit to the project location at Kuala Sungai Sibuti.
“We want the jetty to become a reality for the development of the local fishing community, which is why we have invited various government agencies to inspect the project site,” the Bekenu assemblywoman told reporters when met after the site visit.
The agencies involved in the inspection are Miri Resident’s Office (Strategic Planning and Project Implementation Section), Subis District Council, Public Works Department (JKR), Land and Survey Department, Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB), Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB), Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), Sarawak Marine Department, Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM), Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB), and the Bekenu State Constituency Service Centre.
Meanwhile, Kampung Kuala Sibuti headman Abdullah Yaman expressed his gratitude for the state government with regard to the implementation of the jetty project.
“This will improve the quality of life for the village, which houses over 500 residents.
“The fishermen’s catch are usually sold in Bekenu and Sepupok Niah. With the jetty, it will boost the economy of the village here.
“Also, the jetty is expected to attract visitors, and we aim to transform our village into a new tourist attraction,” he said.
