Jobless man who threatened to hurl chair at sister jailed 2 months

MIRI: (Oct 21) An unemployed man was sentenced by the Magistrates’ Court here today to two months in jail for threatening his sister with a chair.

Senior Assistant Registrar Mohammad Helmi Abdul Jani meted out the sentence on Zulqimi Sulaiman, 39, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 352 of the Penal Code.

The Section carries imprisonment for up to three months, or a fine not exceeding RM1,000, or both, upon conviction.

The offence was committed at a house in Kampung Batu Satu, Jalan Kuala Baram at around 8pm on Oct 17.

According to the case facts, Zulqimi threatened his sister, 40, by lifting a chair and intimating that he would hurl it at her.

In mitigation, the accused pleaded for a light sentence as it was his first offence.

He also told the court that he is jobless, and has to support his wife and three children.

Separately, a woman was fined RM1,800 in default six weeks in prison after she pleaded guilty in the same courtroom to abusing drugs.

Casey Sitak, 27, from Tinjar, Baram was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 15(1) of the same Act.

The court also ordered her to undergo two years of police supervision.

She was tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine at the Miri Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division office at 10.35am on Jan 8, 2024.

In mitigation, the unemployed married mother-of-two pleaded for a light sentence as this was her first offence.

Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman prosecuted both cases, while the two accused were unrepresented.
