KAPIT (July 31): Athletes from the division who will represent Sarawak at the 21st edition of the Malaysian Games (Sukma XXI) have proven Kapit is able to produce high quality sportspersons, said Galong Luang.

The Kapit Resident said boxers from SMK Kapit, as well as silat exponents, hockey players, and netball players from the division will compete in Sukma XXI.

“Kapit has great potential because our athletes, when properly trained, are able to shine at both state and national levels,” he said when officiating at the 45th Kapit Division Inter-School Sports Council (MSSB) athletics championship at the Kapit Sports Field today.

He commended the athletes from Bukit Mabong, Song, and Kapit districts, as well as the officials and teachers for braving the rain for the annual competition.

“Our government emphasises on holistic education for a balance in the academic and skills, as well as physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional well-being.

“The education policy requires each and every student to be involved in at least one sports and uniform body to build their physical and mental well-being.

“A healthy person will surely study better because he is more focused and disciplined knowing time management and staying away from social vices,” he said.

He pointed out athletes also benefit from teamwork, discipline, cooperation, comradeship, effective communication, and effective management.

Some 700 athletes, coaches, teachers, and parents attended the ceremony.

From that figure, around 60 will be selected to represent Kapit at the state-level competition on Sept 1-6 in Sri Aman.
