SIBU (Aug 1): Find the right balance for children to use the digital media and technology to their advantage without neglecting their social skills development, said Datuk Michael Tiang.

The Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government said while it is important to encourage children to have a good knowledge and understanding of modern technology, this, however, should not be at the expense of their social skills.

“Technology is a necessity now because it has become an ever-present part of everyone’s lives, including children.

“What is important is we need to find that balance between the children’s involvement in the digital world, while at the same time allowing them to grow and help build their characters,” he said.

Tiang’s text-of-speech at the closing of the ‘Potensi Kanak-Kanak Tabika Kemas Zon 4’ was read by Sibu Rural District Council Environment and Public Health Standing Committee chairman Cr Kevin Lau.

Hosted by the Community Development Department (Kemas), the inter-zone mini sports competitions for the kindergarteners were held at the district police headquarters’ badminton court here yesterday.

Tabika Kemas of the Sibu parliamentary here was declared the overall champion, followed by Tabika Kemas Selangau and Mukah in the second and third spots, respectively.

Tiang, who is Pelawan assemblyman, also highlighted the importance of team sports which allowed young children to work together as a team and respect their team members, as well as to develop communication skills and a sense of community.

Also present at the event was Kemas Sibu Division officer Ami Fariza Mat Josh.
