KL man in Kuching fined RM10,000 for engaging in online gambling on phone

KUCHING (Sept 27): A man from Kuala Lumpur was fined RM10,000 in default three months’ jail by the Magistrates’ Court today after he pleaded guilty to having dealt with a gambling machine on Wednesday.

Mohammad Nur Adha Murad, 33, entered the plea before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali to a charge framed under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

The Section carries a fine of between RM10,000 and RM100,000 for each gambling machine seized, and jail of not more than five years, upon conviction.

Based on the facts of the case, police raided the premises during an ‘Op Dadu’ operation and apprehended the accused on suspicion of engaging in online gambling using a mobile phone.

Seized from the accused were RM100 cash and a mobile phone which an expert later confirmed that it had been used as a gambling machine.

ASP Arman Ibrahim prosecuted the case while the accused was unrepresented by counsel.
