KOTA SAMARAHAN, Aug 2: The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) is calling young individuals aged 9 to 17 within its jurisdiction to join its newly established Youth Council that aims to empower their voices in influencing local policies, contribute to community development, and build leadership skills.
MPKS councillor Dr Florince Christy, who leads the community development and tourism sector, highlighted that the mission of the Kota Samarahan Youth Council is to ensure that the rights of every young person in Kota Samarahan are respected and promoted in driving significant improvements across various sectors in their community.
“The Council will champion the rights of children and young people, advocating for positive changes within our municipality,” she told a press conference to announce the child-friendly cities initiative at MPKS Headquarters today.
Florince emphasised that the Youth Council will ensure a diverse and inclusive representation from various areas and social backgrounds, including lower, middle, and upper-income groups.
“Specifically, there will be five representatives each from the Stakan, Muara Tuang, Asajaya, and Sadong Jaya areas, as well as two representatives each from the Salvation Army and people with disabilities.
“This diversity ensures that the Council accurately represents the unique needs and perspectives of all youth in Kota Samarahan,” she said.
She urged all eligible youths to take part in this transformative journey to make a difference in their community.
“Your participation is crucial in ensuring that the voices of young people are heard and that positive change is enacted throughout Kota Samarahan,” she added.
MPKS chairman Dato Peter Minos and Unicef Malaysia sub-national planning officer Yong Li Na were present.
According to a statement, the Youth Council will comprise 24 executive committee members, including a chairperson, vice chairperson, secretary, deputy secretary, treasurer, deputy treasurer, and 18 general members.
