Kota Sentosa rep: Work with MBKS to solve issues, don’t turn complaints into publicity

KUCHING, Sept 22: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has urged residents and elected representatives to work with Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to resolve community issues instead of turning complaints into publicity.

Yap said addressing problems should begin with identifying their causes and working with the council to find practical solutions.

“It is not about complaining; it is not about putting things in the press. I think we need to work together with the council,” he said after the press conference on Mid-Autumn Festival at the MBKS meeting room today.

He said this approach would allow issues affecting residents’ daily lives to be addressed more effectively, rather than having every problem brought to the media.

“If we see a problem, we try to find out what the problem is, and then from that finding out of that problem, we see how we can resolve the problem, rather than every single thing going to the press and then making a mountain out of a molehill,” Yap said.

As the elected representative for Kota Sentosa, where Hui Sing Recreation Park is located, Yap said he would continue working with MBKS, community leaders and residents to improve the neighbourhood and address issues affecting the community.

He also thanked MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and the council’s councillors for being proactive in responding to issues raised on the ground.

“I would like to thank the mayor and all the MBKS councillors, because every time there is an issue on the ground, I think the councillors and the mayor are very proactive in trying to get the matter resolved,” he said.

Yap added that the focus should be on serving the community regardless of political background.

“I hope that all of us, whatever political backgrounds we are, I think the people must come first, not our own publicity,” he said.

At the same time, he urged those who received complaints from residents to take responsibility for understanding the cause of the problem and finding ways to resolve it.

“Don’t use the people’s problem as a publicity tool. If you see a problem, and then people complain to you, I think we have a responsibility and duty to find out what is the cause of the problem, how do we actually resolve the problem,” Yap said.

Yap also linked the approach to the Sarawak government’s social inclusivity policy, saying communities should continue working towards a safe, clean, harmonious and united environment where everyone feels included and cared for.

Earlier, Yap was speaking at a press conference on the Mid-Autumn Festival at the MBKS meeting room, where he described the celebrations at Hui Sing Recreation Park, Kenyalang Traffic Garden and Taman Sahabat as reflecting the council’s implementation of social inclusivity at the local level.

He thanked Wee for choosing Hui Sing Recreation Park as one of the venues for this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival celebration and expressed hope that the event could be held again next year. — DayakDaily
