KUCHING (July 14): The Kuching Autistic Association (KAA) has successfully raised RM350,000 during its charity food fair held at the Association of Churches, Jalan Stampin, here today.
The event, aimed at supporting autistic children and their families, saw a significant turnout from the community.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian commended the collective efforts of parents, sponsors, and the public for their contributions to the fundraising event, now in its 18th year with 80 participating stalls.
“This is the very spirit we need in our Sarawak nation-building. Children born with autism do not choose their condition, but we choose to help them.
“Parents and the public coming together exemplifies the inclusivity in Sarawak PCDS 2030, ensuring no one is left behind,” he told reporters after officiating the event.
Dr Sim also urged the public to support autistic children not out of pity but through actionable help.
He emphasised the need for special education and facilities for autistic children and the importance of integrating them into the community.
“We want parents to bring their children into the community to share our love for them,” he said.
He stressed the importance of ongoing community support, even outside of events, by visiting and understanding the operations of the KAA.
“It’s very important that we have to start thinking for them. After their parents die, who will help them? The public, the community, the association – we need to come together to support them.
“Just because someone is autistic does not mean they are an outcast or cannot live long. We wish everyone longevity.
“Disadvantaged or poor, everyone deserves a long life. That’s what Sarawak stands for,” he added.
