KUCHING (Aug 8): Kuching Elite Wushu Club enjoyed a fruitful outing at the recent “Belt and Road” International Competition held at KSL Esplanade, Klang.
The tournament was organised by Wushu Federation of Malaysia in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of China-Malaysia Diplomatic Relations.
The 18-strong Kuching Elite squad collected 47 gold, 26 silver and 10 bronze medals in the competition which attracted over 1,000 athletes from many countries including China, US, Indonesia, Taiwan and Malaysia.
Hong Wu Kang, a 13-year old student of SMK Sungai Tapang, was the team’s star performer, bagging eight gold medals in Boys Group C changquan (2), daoshu (3), gunshu (3) in various categories.
Eight-year-old Janessa Chong Ming Zhen of SJK Chung Hua Mile 4 1/2 also impressed with six golds from Girls Group A taijiquan (3), taijijian (2), taji foundation (1) and taiji short weapon (1).
Contributing five golds was Jayson Chong Jie Sheng of SJK Chung Hua Mile 4 1/2 while SJK Chung Hua No. 3’s Marcius Ting Meng Xing bagged four golds and Cherlyn Hong Jia Hui of SMK Sungai Tapang collected three golds and two silvers.
Double gold medalists included Jeffrey Bong Jun Wei of SJK Chung Hua Bako, Bong Wei Zhe of SMK Jalan Arang, Marcus Ting Meng En of SJK Chung Hua No.3 and Dylon Jee Yek Fong of Chung Hua Middle School No. 3 while those delivering one gold each were Bong Wei Shi of SMK Jalan Arang, Alicia Ng Xin Wei of SJK Chung Hua No.3 and Einstein Chin Yee Ge of SMK Sungai Tapang.
Club president and head coach Lydia Ling Ung Hee said the athletes had exceeded expectations.
“This is a very good exposure outing for our athletes and we will continue to send them to state and national competitions in Semenanjung Malaysia,” she told The Borneo Post.
