KUCHING (Aug 1): The city’s iconic river taxis, known locally as ‘perahu tambang’, will soon ply the Sarawak River using solar energy, said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The Premier said these river taxis will be fitted with solar panels which would generate power for their engines.
“I have directed that the river taxis on the Sarawak River utilise solar power. The solar panels will provide the energy needed to operate the engines, and the taxis will be adorned with lights for night-time illumination,” he said.
He said this in his officiating speech at Kuching City’s 36th Commemorative Day celebration, at Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Square today.
Adding on, Abang Johari said he envisions a vibrant Sarawak River, featuring multi-coloured river taxis as a new attraction.
“Just imagine the Sarawak River with brightly lit, multi-coloured taxis. This will not only enhance the river’s appeal but also showcase our commitment to clean energy,” he said.
He also mentioned that the cost of this initiative would be covered by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government.
“We don’t expect passengers to bear the cost due to its expense. Instead, GPS will fund this project, adding value to the Sarawak River and promoting sustainable tourism.”
Earlier, the Premier outlined the state’s efforts towards sustainability, particularly in public transportation.
“We are moving towards sustainable public transport using hydrogen. Soon, we will have the first low-carbon public transport in the region, free from emissions, making our city cleaner for Sarawakians,” he said.
He also highlighted the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) which will be powered by hydrogen, and encouraged the use of electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles to further reduce carbon emissions.
On the 36th anniversary of Kuching attaining city status, Abang Johari expressed hope for the state’s capital to continue to thrive through the use of technology, cleanliness, and excellent services.
