KUCHING (Oct 26): The Sarawak River along the Kuching Waterfront came alive with vibrant colors, lively chants, and rhythmic drumbeats today as the Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta entered its second day.

Teams from around the world gathered early, with participants arriving at the waterfront as early as 6.30am, soon joined by enthusiastic spectators and locals.

Crowds cheered and waved flags representing various nations and teams as dragon boats surged through the river’s currents, creating an electrifying atmosphere.

Adding to the festive spirit, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg graced the event by participating in the traditional dragon eye-dotting ceremony.

The Premier also inaugurated the Borneo Craft Festival, held along Jalan Main Bazaar, which showcases the artistry and craftsmanship of Sarawak and beyond.

This year’s festival features 112 entrepreneurs, with artisans from Sarawak and other parts of Malaysia displaying their works.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Abang Johari said that the 10th Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta attracted over 2,000 participants from 21 countries.

He noted that the event’s popularity continues to grow, with an increase in participants this year.

“There were many more who would want to join but due to limited space, we can only take half the number.

“Thanks to Kraftangan Malaysia, we’re also seeing some 112 entrepreneurs nationwide participating in the Borrneo Craft Festival, of which 75 of them are from Sarawak, 21 from Sabah, and the remaining numbers are from Peninsular Malaysia,” he said.

Among those present at the event were Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Sarawak Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar.
