KUCHING: Kuching has become the first location for on-demand delivery services by Lalamove in East Malaysia due to the large number of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) here.

Lalamove managing director Jane Teh said another reason was the robust population here, coupled with a very healthy income record.

“Of course, there are a lot of government projects being held here and that being said, we can do a number of partnerships with the government agencies here on the aspects of logistics,” she said.

Teh added that the reception of on-demand delivery services Lalamove in Kuching had been truly positive ever since its inception around May this year.

“However, Lalamove users would like to see the expansion of the services beyond Kuching City, especially in the rural areas. In terms of total number of users, we are seeing a good trend among the first-time users.

“We have actually seen several cake bakery shops use Lalamove, especially during the weekends.

“At the same time, we need to create more public awareness of Lalamove, and with the launch of two-wheel vehicles very soon, we are confident  the demand for long distance deliveries will increase,” she said.

Teh said this during a press conference after attending the opening ceremony of first ever Lalamove Driver Centre here, officiated by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin yesterday.

She explained that while the main focus for the delivery service was still in Kuching, Lalamove hoped to expand its services to other main urban centres in Sarawak like Sibu, Miri and Bintulu.

“Right now, we’re focusing on sustainable growth. So we really need to understand the landscape here and see if there are any existing clients that we can serve,” she added.

She also revealed there were plans to use trucks and lorries for bigger deliveries.

“But at the moment, we only have 4×4 vehicles because they are currently the best for delivery, especially when the locations are within the outskirts of the city,” she added.

Founded in Hong Kong in 2013, Lalamove is an on-demand delivery platform with a mission to make delivery fast, simple and affordable.

Lalamove expanded to Malaysia in 2018, capitalising on the rise of on-demand services driven by the mobile device adoption and business digitalisation.
