SIBU (Oct 31): Lanang MP Alice Lau recently held a meeting with Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad on the sidelines of the parliament session to formally advocate for the establishment of a heart and cancer centre in Sibu.
Lau, who is also Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker, stressed the urgent need for an affordable treatment centre dedicated to heart disease and cancer.
“Being in the central region of Sarawak, Sibu is ideally located to serve not only its residents but also those in nearby areas such as Sarikei, Bintangor, Kapit, Julau, Kanowit and Selangau.
“Currently, patients in the central region of Sarawak suffering from heart disease and cancer often face long journeys to Kuching or even Kuala Lumpur for treatment, increasing their burden and the risk of their conditions deteriorating,” she said in a statement.
Lau said she had presented this proposal to former health minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa last year, and took the opportunity to inquire with Dr Dzulkefly on any recent progress or response from the ministry regarding the proposal.
She reiterated her appeal to the Health Ministry to actively consider and approve this proposal to provide the people of Sarawak, particularly those in Sibu, with professional, high-quality and accessible heart and cancer care services.
