Lee calls for judicious use of drones

KUCHING: Agencies and departments under the Transport Ministry have been told to ensure every drone operator in Sarawak is fully aware of the legal requirements and the potential risks associated with improper drone use.

Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said it is not just about avoiding fines or penalties but rather about protecting lives, safeguarding the state’s heritage and maintaining the integrity of Sarawak’s airspace.

“In Sarawak, we are blessed with vast natural landscapes, rich biodiversity and a unique cultural heritage.

“These factors make our state an attractive destination for drone enthusiasts and professionals alike.

“However, it also means that we must be extra vigilant in protecting the environment, cultural sites and airspace,” he said.

He said this during the opening of the Sarawak Aviation Safety Talk 2024 Southern Region here on Tuesday (Aug 13).

“Our Ministry is also committed to launching public awareness campaign, which will involve collaboration with local authorities, community leaders, and media outlets to disseminate information on drone regulations.

“Various workshops, seminars and outreach programmes will be held to educate the public, throughout Sarawak, be it in the Southern, Central or Northern Region,” he added.

In addition, he urged all association, companies and individuals in the state to take drone issues seriously.

“The use of drones is not just a matter of personal freedom, it is a matter of public safety and national security.

“Let us work together to ensure that every drone flight in Sarawak is conducted legally, safely, and with utmost respect for our environment and our fellow citizens,” he added.

He said that safety is a collective responsibility, and by working together, everyone can foster an aviation environment where safety is embedded in every decision and action.

“Our dedication to aviation safety is a testament to our commitment to the wellbeing of every individual who takes to the skies.

“We need to work together with renewed vigour and shared purpose to build an aviation environment where safety is not just a priority but a fundamental value,” he said.

Also present during the opening were Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Jerip Susil and chief executive officer of Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud.
