KUCHING (Sept 8): People from all walks of life have rendered their support to a fundraiser organised by the Chung Hua Middle School (CHMS) No.1 here today.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian launched the event, aimed at raising RM300,000 to help cover the school’s annual operating expenses and activities.

Individuals, mostly Chinese education enthusiasts, thronged the school as early as 7am to play a part in contributing to the good cause.

A total of 150 stalls lined up in and around the school hall, offering a wide variety of food and products for supporters.

The school extended appreciation to Dr Sim, as well as various sponsors and the local community, for contributing to the success of the fundraiser.

Among those present was Kuching CHMS No.1, 3 and 4 Management Committee chairman Datuk Richard Wee.

Met by reporters after the launch, CHMS No.1 principal Lee Chee Beng said they aimed to raise RM300,000, and were hopeful of exceeding the target and securing RM400,000.

According to him, the financial burden of the school has been greatly reduced, thanks to the continued support from the state government.

He said the purpose of having this fundraiser was to engage students in organising an activity so as to help groom their leadership skills.

“The ultimate aim is not to raise fund but more on providing a platform for our students to work on their organising and leadership skills,” added Lee.

He expressed gratitude to all, including school board and community leaders, sponsors, teachers and students, who joined hands to make the fundraiser a success.
