Local leaders urged to conduct thorough background checks for MyKad applications

MIRI: Bekenu assemblywoman Datuk Rosey Yunus has stressed the importance of local community leaders in rural areas conducting thorough background checks for MyKad applications sent to them for verification. 

Rosey, who is also the Deputy Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, made this reminder during a fire safety programme at Rh Richard Pie in Bekenu recently.

She stressed the need for careful scrutiny to ensure that MyKad is not granted to outsiders, particularly illegal immigrants. 

“Check all documents submitted thoroughly before putting your signature. We must be careful in order to protect our people, and to ensure that the applications are from Sarawakians, and not foreigners (illegal immigrants).”

In addition to conducting checks, Rosey encouraged local community leaders to assist native Sarawakians lacking proper documents in applying for MyKad. 

For those awaiting approval of their citizenship applications, she advised applying for temporary documents to facilitate access to education and healthcare.

During a citizenship documentation application programme in Sepupok Niah, a total of 333 undocumented native Sarawakians in Subis District were identified.
