KUCHING, Sept 12: Police have arrested a 37-year-old local man with five previous criminal records over a suspected cable theft in Kampung Bintawa Ulu here, after the incident was captured in a video circulated on social media.

According to a recent statement, Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the suspect was arrested by officers from the Kuching District Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) at about 5.40pm yesterday in the Kampung Bintawa Ulu area.

Police investigations found that the incident occurred at about 8.30am on Sept 10, when the suspect was allegedly involved in stealing cables along Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin using a sharp tool.

A preliminary urine screening also tested positive for drugs, while police checks found that the suspect had five previous criminal records.

The case is being investigated under Section 431A of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of two years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
