Longhouse enters MBOR for longest rattan-decorated wall

SIBU: The Uma Ukit Apau Koyan longhouse in Sungai Asap, Belaga, has officially secured a spot in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for having the longest traditional rattan-decorated wall, measuring an impressive 185.4 metres.

The certificate of recognition was presented by MBOR representative Edwin Yeoh to Maren Uma Ngarit Lejap, in a ceremony witnessed by Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon.

During the event, Chukpai praised the accomplishment as a symbol of the Orang Ulu community’s rich cultural heritage and dedication to preserving their traditions.

 “This achievement reflects not only the beauty of our culture but also the determination of our people to uphold traditions passed down through generations,” he said.

The assemblyman highlighted the significance of rattan in the design, describing it as a material that embodies both strength and artistic expression.

 “The rattan, which adorns the walls of this longhouse, represents the resilience and elegance of our local craftsmanship. It’s a source of pride for all Malaysians,” he said.

Chukpai also expressed his gratitude to those involved in the effort, emphasising the collective spirit of the community.

“This success is the result of unity and cooperation within the community. Every piece of decoration on the wall reflects traditional values, and it showcases the remarkable creativity and skill of the local artisans.”

He added that this achievement could further elevate the longhouse as a tourist attraction, drawing visitors interested in the unique culture and artistry of the Orang Ulu.
