MIRI (Aug 9): Construction on the Lutong fire station’s Musolla Al-Azhar surau is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 6 Miri head senior fire superintendent I Ismaidi Ismail said the surau will be constructed with an allocation from Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Rosey Yunus.

“The idea to build a surau at Lutong Bomba Station came from the head of this fire station itself, senior fire officer II Henry Jugah, as well as his team and is registered under the Sarawak Islamic Council.

“For everyone’s information, the allocation was from Datuk Rosey Yunus, who is also the patron of this Musolla Al-Azhar. Therefore, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Datuk Rosey for her support and assistance, in the construction of this surau,” he told reporters after carrying out the groundbreaking ceremony at the Musolla Al-Azhar site yesterday.

Ismaidi said the construction of the surau will involve two phases, where the first phase is the construction of the surau’s frame by the appointed contractor.

“The second phase involves the construction of the surau’s structure until it is fully completed, which is expected by the end of this year.

“The construction will also be unique as it will involve all members of Lutong Bomba Station, where a gotong-royong concept will be used to build some parts of the surau,” he said.

Once completed, Ismaidi hopes the surau could be used by the firefighters to further strengthen their faith and spiritual development.

“For me, that spiritual strength will shape the personality of our personnel.

“So, of course this surau is very important not only to our Muslim personnel, but also to non-Muslim, because in my opinion this is a unifying centre for all our personnel.

“Apart from religious activities, this surau can also be used as a meeting place for the head of the station to discuss activities that are deemed necessary to unite all Lutong Bomba Station personnel,” he added.
