BINTULU (Aug 1): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) detained a civil servant here yesterday on suspicion of abusing power for personal gain.

An MACC spokesman said the 54-year-old man was detained to assist with the investigation of the misappropriation of zakat funds amounting to RM5,000.

He said the man was detained at the MACC Bintulu Branch Office around 2.30pm after giving his statement.

According to sources, the suspect, who works in a government department, is suspected of not channelling education zakat funds to over 100 students at a school in 2021, using the funds instead for personal gain.

The suspect was detained for 24 hours for questioning and has been released on MACC bail with one guarantor.

The case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
