The men’s sepak takraw team ended a 36-year wait for the team regu gold medal after defeating rivals Thailand 2-0 in the final of the 2026 Asian Games today.
The victory at Nagoya City Mizuho Arena saw the Golden Tigers replicate their achievement at the 1990 Beijing Asian Games, when Malaysia last won gold in the event after defeating Thailand in the final, reported Berita Harian.
The sepak takraw team’s gold was Malaysia’s fourth gold medal at this year’s Aichi-Nagoya Games after topping the podium twice in karate and once in e-sports.
The sepak takraw team made a strong start when the first regu of Syahir Rosdi, Farhan Adam and Azlan Alias defeated Thailand’s Marukin Phanmakon, Putawan Sopa and Pornthep Tingbangbon 15-9, 5-15, 15-11 to secure the first point.
The second Malaysian regu, comprising Zulkifli Razak, Aidil Aiman Azwawi and Afifudin Razali, then sealed victory by defeating Thailand’s Kritsanapong Nontakote, Tanaphon Sapyen and Wuttinu Kamsanor 15-13, 15-10 in straight sets.
This marked Malaysia’s second consecutive victory over Thailand in a major multi-sport tournament’s team regu final, following their victory at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand last December.
