KUCHING, 16 September: Malaysia Day should be an opportunity for all people to relive the history of Malaysian formation and understand Sabah and Sarawak's rights within the Federation.
Deputy Prime Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said that September 16 is not just a public holiday, but a day commemorating the formation of Malaysia in 1963 involving the Federations of Malays, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore.
He said Malaysia Day, which was first celebrated as a public holiday in 2010, should be a space for people not only in Sarawak but across Malaysia, to rethink the meaning of a nation formed through the Federation.
"On September 16 every year, it is time for all Malaysians, not just the people of Sarawak, to rethink our federation", he said in a message on Malaysia Day 2026.
Dr Sim said, understanding of the 1963 Malaysia Agreement (MA63) is also important to ensure that Sabah and Sarawak's rights as well as Federal Government responsibilities continue to be taken into account.
According to him, MA63 which is now formally enshrined in the Federal Constitution should always be used as a reference in understanding the position of both states in the formation of Malaysia.
"Now that it is officially in the Constitution, we must always look to Sabah and Sarawak's rights, as well as Malaysian Government responsibilities", he said.
He said Malaysia Day should have a more meaningful fulfillment with people understanding the country's goals, mission and vision rather than just enjoying public holidays.
Meanwhile, Dr Sim said that Sarawak is now seen as one of the states with potential to contribute towards Malaysia's new destination, following an increase in hopes and confidence in the state.
He said the development should be welcomed in a spirit of solidarity to shape Malaysia's future together.
"Let's celebrate Malaysia Day together with purpose, mission and vision", he said.
