KUCHING, Feb 13: Journalism excellence draws record attention this year as 603 entries from 61 media organisations are submitted for the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) PETRONAS Malaysian Journalism Awards 2025 (HKM 2025).
The figure marks the highest number of entries since the awards were first introduced in 1980, reflecting growing participation and interest among local media practitioners. The 603 entries are 53 more than last year, with participants competing for a total of RM450,000 in cash prizes, sponsored by PETRONAS.
MPI chief executive officer Dr Ainol Amriz Ismail said the awards remain an important benchmark for journalistic excellence.
“The HKM Awards are important as a benchmark of journalistic excellence, recognising media works that are quality-driven, ethical, and impactful for society.
“This recognition enhances the credibility and professional reputation of journalists while encouraging healthy competition and improvement in reporting standards.
“PETRONAS’ support as the main sponsor strengthens the continuity and prestige of the awards, while MPI coordinates the platform transparently and professionally, linking it to the national media development and training agenda,” said in a statement yesterday (Feb 12).
Among the categories were Best Video News recorded the highest number of entries with 61 submissions, followed by Best Video Documentary with 55 entries, up from 36 the year before.
In contrast, the Best Photojournalism category saw a sharp decline, dropping to 38 entries compared to 79 submissions last year.
“HKM is not just a platform for recognition but also serves as a catalyst to inspire journalists to produce high-impact work based on innovation, integrity, dedication, and strict adherence to journalistic ethics,” said Ainol.
He added that with PETRONAS’ support, MPI is committed to upholding media standards, fostering creativity, and ensuring local journalism remains credible and influential, while HKM highlights the importance of accurate, high-quality reporting.
Meanwhile, MPI announced that nominations for the National Journalist Award, National Media Figure Award, and Special Awards are open until March 31, 2026.
