SIBU (July 14): The Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu branch has launched its ‘Flag Sale’ project to raise RM30,000 to run its activities this year.
Its chairman Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee says MRCS Sibu branch does not receive any grant from the government, thus faces constraints in carrying out its activities.
According to him, there are misconceptions that MRCS is part of the government institutions and one which does not require any financial assistance.
As a matter of fact, he said MRCS functions as a support organisation, auxiliary to the Malaysian government in the humanitarian field.
The funds collected from the flag sale, he said, will be utilised to cover the costs for the ambulance and first aid services, for the blood donors’ recognition cum certificate presentation day, for the training of youth volunteers, as well as for disaster management and other community services.
“Our recurrent expenditure for the region is RM200,000 per annum, and therefore, we hope that the public will give their support towards our annual flag sale,” he said.
MRCS Sibu also extended its appreciation to the Sibu people and the elected representatives for their donations over the past years.
Also present at the event were MRCS Sibu branch advisor Datuk Lau Ngie Hua, deputy chairman Hii Sie Toh and vice chairman Normah Abdul Rahman.
