Man gets 7 years’ jail, 3 strokes for armed robbery in Kuching

KUCHING (July 31): A man was sentenced to seven years’ jail and ordered to be given three strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here today for robbing a 24-hour convenient store cashier while armed with a folding saw.

Judge Iris Awen Jon meted out the sentence against 30-year-old Mohammad Nasrullah Abdullah after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 392 of the Penal Code read together with Section 397 of the same Code.

The Section carries a jail term of 14 years of imprisonment, a fine, or whipping, if convicted.

He committed the offence at the 24-hour convenient store in Jalan Main Bazaar here around 4.14am on July 24, 2024.

Based on the facts of the case, the 19-year-old victim, who was on duty at the store, was approached by Mohammad Nasrullah who was armed with a folding saw.

After being forced by Mohamad Nasrullah, the cashier handed over RM700 out of fear. Mohammad Nasrullah then fled, leaving the cashier unharmed.

A police report was lodged that led to the arrest of Mohammad Nasrullah on the next day.

Investigations found that Mohammad Nasrullah did not wear a mask or a face covering during the robbery, and the victim managed to identify him during an identification parade.

A closed-circuit television footage also showed Mohammad Nasrullah robbing the victim with a folding saw, which was subsequently seized by the police.

The case was prosecuted by deputy public prosecutor Norshafatihah Nor Azmi, while Mohammad Nasrullah was unrepresented by counsel.
