Man in Kuching fined RM5,000 for bashing dad while drunk

KUCHING (July 10): A man who assaulted his father while intoxicated was fined RM5,000 in default five months’ jail after pleading guilty in the Magistrates’ Court here today to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt.

Darwin Chin Kui Sen, 26, made the plea before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi after the charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code read together with Section 326A of the same Code was read to him.

He committed the offence at the family’s house in Kampung Sekuduk, Mile 24 Jalan Kuching-Serian at around 9.30pm on July 5, 2024.

Based on the facts of the case, a drunken Chin flew into a rage after his father, 64, reprimanded him for kicking a table.

He strangled his father and punched him in the face, before stomping on his hand and body after the latter fell to the floor.

The father later lodged a police report, leading to Chin’s arrest the next day at around 1.30pm.

In the same courtroom, a 22-year-old man was fined RM4,000 in default one month in jail for stealing vehicle parts and tools.

Magistrate Zubaidah convicted Ronnie Benard on his own guilty plea to a charge framed under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

The offence was committed at a house in Desa Wira Lot, Jalan Batu Kawa between 4am and 6am on July 2, 2024.

Based on the facts of the case, the complainant in the case discovered two car batteries, one hydraulic jack and one drill missing from outside his house.

Closed-circuit television footage confirmed the accused was behind the theft.

In addition, the complainant and an individual who bought the stolen tools from Ronnie were both able to pick him out during a police identification parade.

ASP Rogayah Rosli prosecuted both cases.
