MIRI (Sept 22): Mastering the Mandarin language is essential not only to bridge cultural gaps, but also to enhance communication in leadership and daily interactions, said Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
The Sarawak Transport Minister emphasised the growing importance of the language in global communication, and that there would be more benefits and advantages than otherwise.
“Mandarin is one of the most widely spoken languages in Malaysia and Sarawak. Fluency in the language provides a significant advantage when communicating with foreigners, especially from China and Taiwan,” said Lee when speaking at the Miri Mandarin Toastmaster Club Installation banquet on Sept 20.
He noted that those proficient in the language are often better positioned in the job market, particularly in industries that engage with Chinese-speaking counterparts, emphasising the importance of avoiding language mistakes that could lead to misunderstandings.
Adding on, Lee highlighted Toastmasters as an excellent platform for honing communication skills, particularly through public speaking.
“I’ve been speaking for decades, both locally and internationally, and I’ve seen how effective communication can prevent misunderstandings.
“Therefore, the ability to speak multiple languages offers a distinct advantage, since relying on translators can sometimes result in miscommunications,” he said.
Lee added that public speaking is a powerful tool to drive social change as it plays a role in strengthening community ties and promoting social development.
“Speeches allow individuals to convey important messages, advocate for social issues and inspire action. This kind of communication fosters unity and encourages people to contribute to community progress,” he said.
