MIRI (Oct 12): Some areas in Marudi, including the bazaar and several villages downstream, were flooded on Friday as water surged upriver following receding waters upstream.
The Marudi Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in a statement said the water level at the Marudi Bazaar had risen by two to three inches as the floodwaters upriver were pushed downstream.
“Several houses in low-lying areas were flooded as the Baram River overflowed its banks. The main road in Marudi remains accessible as of yesterday, except for the road to Kampung Narum which is under one and a half feet of water,” it said.
It also advised the community to be on high alert in case the water level continues to rise, and to evacuate their homes if the situation worsens.
It was learnt the main road to Marudi from Miri had also been inundated as of this morning.
According to a source, the ferry was still in operation this morning despite the rising water level.
