KUCHING: Marvin Lim Zhi Cheng from UCSI University Sarawak was crowned as the winner of the Anugerah Tangan Emas Premier 2023 in Worldskills Malaysia Sarawak 2023.
Besides going home with RM5,000 from the award, he also took home RM 3,000, a medal and a certificate from winning the first place in the Cooking category.
Lim said that getting the overall best winner award was beyond his expectations because many participants showed excellence in their respective fields of expertise.
“However, I am very grateful for this award because it can be a benchmark for my achievements in the future,” he said when met by New Sarawak Tribune.
Lim attributed his achievement to the help he received from his lecturers and classmates who never stopped giving innovative ideas in the production of food menus.
“I took more than a month to practise cooking menu variations to prepare myself for this competition,” he said.
According to Lim, in the competition, participants in the cooking category were given the challenge of preparing a variety of food menus.
“Undoubtedly, the preparation of the menus in this competition was very challenging for me, especially the appetiser category, which specified canapés.
“Even so, I didn’t give up on using the skills I have to produce the dish,” he revealed.
Lim said the competition served as a platform to hone the talents of the participants in the field of skills, thus raising the status of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) to a higher level.
For the record, the Anugerah Tangan Emas Premier 2023 is the highest award given to the overall best winner during Worldskills Malaysia Sarawak 2023, which took place from October 28 to December 10.
