MIRI (July 30): Miri City Council (MCC) is committed in taking serious action against illegal advertisements that have been put up around the city, said Mayor Adam Yii.
According to him, MCC has removed a total of 1,346 illegal advertisements to date (July 2024).
He said the removal of illegal advertisements was conducted after the council received numerous complaints, mostly concerning money lending advertisements without permits.
“Not only the illegal advertisements are affecting the image and scenery of Miri city, they also cause disturbances and threaten public safety, especially road users.
“Therefore, operations have been conducted by MCC Enforcement Section throughout the month of July 2024 to remove these illegal advertisements,” it added.
Yii said a total of 35 warning notices were issued under Section 17 of the Local Authorities (Advertisements) By-Laws 2012 to owners of reflexology centres, money lenders, furniture shops and other businesses that had put up advertisements covering their windows.
“Additionally, the council has taken action to remove illegal advertisements that are either expired, damaged or without permit around Miri city.”
Yii, who is also Pujut assemblyman, urged residents, businesses and advertising companies in the city to comply with the conditions set for putting up and displaying advertisements and business signboards.
He said members of the public who wish to put up advertisements must apply for a permit at the Enforcement Section of Miri City Council, UTC Building Level 2.
Failure to comply will subject the offender to action under Sections 23 and 28 of the Local Authorities (Advertisements) By-Laws 2012, with a maximum fine of RM5,000, and the advertisements will be seized.
