MBKS brings Mid-Autumn festivities to three Kuching parks

KUCHING (Sept 22): The Mooncake Festival, or Mid-Autumn Festival, is being celebrated at three parks here as the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) brings the festivities closer to local communities.

Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said celebrations will be held at Kenyalang Traffic Garden, Hui Sing Park and Friendship Park.

“At Kenyalang Park, we are organising the Mid-Autumn Festival on Thursday and Friday from 6.30pm to 10.30pm at the Traffic Garden.

“At Hui Sing Garden, the celebration is on Friday from 6pm to 9pm. At Taman Sahabat, Moon In 2.0 is currently being held until Sunday from 4pm to 11pm,” he told a press conference here.

He said the celebrations will feature food stalls, live performances, free lanterns and mooncakes while stocks last, as well as a go-kart activity for children at Kenyalang Traffic Garden.

“There will be free lanterns and mooncakes, game stations, lantern riddles, a wishing wall, and live performances. It is a simple neighbourhood celebration but that is exactly the purpose.

“We want the people living around Hui Sing to come down with their families, meet their neighbours and enjoy the evening together. We also want to make better use of our parks and public spaces.

“A park should not only be somewhere we go for jogging or exercise. It should be a place where the community meets, where children have happy memories, where senior citizens feel comfortable coming out and where neighbours get to know one another,” he added.

Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, meanwhile, highlighted the importance of working with the council to address issues faced by the community.

He said the programme reflected the state government’s social inclusivity policy and thanked Wee for choosing Hui Sing Garden as one of the celebration venues.

“This is the first time and hopefully we can see the same event being carried out next year,” he said.

“As the elected representative of Kota Sentosa, in which Hui Sing Garden sits, I will continue to work with MBKS, community leaders and residents to improve our neighbourhood and address issues that matter to our daily life,” he said.

Also present was deputy mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili.
