KUCHING, Oct 16: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is assessing safety improvements around SJK Sungai Apong following concerns over a deep roadside drain near the school that could pose a danger to pupils.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, accompanied by councillor Chai Ju Loon and council officers, visited the school to assess the surrounding infrastructure and identify potential safety hazards yesterday (Oct 15).
The site visit focused on the deep drain, which could become particularly dangerous during heavy rain when rising water levels increase the risk to children. The absence of protective railings has also raised concerns about pupils accidentally falling into the drain.
Wee said the safety of schoolchildren must be prioritised, particularly in areas frequently used by pupils and parents during school drop-off and pick-up times.
“ MBKS is exploring suitable safety improvements, including installing protective railings and constructing a ramp to provide safer access for schoolchildren and parents,” he said in a statement.
The council would assess the site conditions before deciding on the most practical measures to address the concerns.
“Children’s safety is our priority. We must identify potential hazards and take preventive measures before accidents happen,” he added.
The visit is part of MBKS’s ongoing efforts under UNICEF’s Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) to improve school surroundings and provide a safer environment for children. — DayakDaily
