KUCHING, Dec 24: One rabies-positive case has been detected this week in Tabuan Dayak after a stray dog reportedly bit the victim.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng urged the general public to vaccinate their pets against rabies and to do so annually.

“This included both dogs and cats. Cats are also susceptible to rabies infection,” Wee said during his 195th ShallWeeTalk livestream yesterday (Dec 13).

He said 10,000 MBKS calendars and DVS Sarawak rabies brochures had been distributed to the general public.

“We will continue to assist them in distributing the copies so that more people can join the rabies prevention movement and understand what to do if bitten.”

The mayor also strongly encouraged the general public to read the rabies brochure, which provides information on how to get pets vaccinated.

He further mentioned that there will be an increase in the placement of rabies information on billboards, including on overhead bridges.

“I am confident that if we can successfully navigate the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, we can also strive towards eradicating the rabies outbreak and achieving zero cases by 2025.

“I hope that this week’s case (one rabies-positive case) is a good starting point,” Wee added. — DayakDaily
