KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has retained its status as Asean Clean Tourist City, marking its second consecutive recognition.

MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong said the council received the good news through an official letter from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture recently.

“The council is delighted to have received the Asean Clean Tourist City Standard award for the period of 2024 to 2026, and this is a joint effort to keep the city clean,” he said in a statement.

Wee added that the secret to maintaining a clean city is changing the mind-set of the people on the importance of taking care of the environment and to have a clean environment.

“Everyone plays an important role in ensuring the city is clean and safe for tourists. Whatever we do now is for the benefit of the people at large,” he said.

He also assured that as a city council, jobs are taken seriously by considering the environmental aspects and living standards in Kuching City so as to provide excellent hospitality and fulfil tourist needs.

“The council’s consistency in providing good services to the public and tourists is to complement the state’s aim to make Sarawak a leading destination for eco-tourism and business events in the Asean region,” he said.

On the award, he said it was part of the Asean Tourism Standard Awards, which are awards given to acknowledge quality services provided for tourists by local authorities.

“The award has several indicators, including environmental management, cleanliness, waste management, green spaces, health safety, awareness-building about environmental protection, urban safety and security, and tourism infrastructure and facilities,” he said.
