MIRI (Sept 23): Miri City Council (MCC) organised a beach cleaning activity at the Luak Esplanade here on Saturday, in connection with the World Cleanup Day 2024.

Miri deputy mayor Ariffin Mohamad said the event was also participated by representatives of government agencies, the private sector, organisations and schools.

“The World Cleanup Dayis an annual global social action programme initiated by the United Nations.

“Our collective efforts are more than just a beach cleanup as we are also contributing towards creating a more sustainable and waste-free world for future generation,” he said.

The activity, he added, supports UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) against the negative impacts of pollution on both human health and environment.

Ariffin also said MCC’s goals include instilling cleanliness, forging closer ties with the community, government bodies and non-governmental organisations, and strengthening the bonds of friendship and unity.
