MetMalaysia: Kuching among seven districts in S’wak issued Level 1 heatwave alert

KUCHING (July 28): Kuching district was listed as one of the seven districts issued with a Level 1 (alert) heatwave warning by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) as of 4pm today.

The other six districts are Miri, Marudi, Sibu, Kapit, Lubok Antu and Sri Aman.

A Level 1 alert is issued when temperatures reach between 35 degrees Celsius and 37 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days.

An orange alert, or Level 2 warning, is issued when temperatures reach between 37 degrees Celsius and 40 degrees Celsius for three days in a row.

A red alert is issued when temperatures soar past 40 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days, indicating an extreme heatwave.

Apart from the seven districts in Sarawak, the other districts in Malaysia issued a similar alert are Larut and Matang in Perak, Kuala Muda (Kedah), Kuala Krai (Kelantan) and Beaufort (Sabah).

Malaysia has been experiencing hot and dry weather for almost a week.

However, the situation may change for July, particularly in Sarawak, as MetMalaysia in its weather forecast for July 29-Aug 3 has forecasted thunderstorms in several areas.

Kuching also experienced rainfall today, much to the relief of the people in the city.
