Minister calls for expanded disaster depots to bolster flood preparedness

KUCHING: The Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKMS) has expressed the need for the establishment of independent depots in both the central and northern zones of Sarawak to enhance readiness for potential floods.

Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah pointed out that the state currently relies on a single large depot with a 420-ton capacity, stocked with essential equipment for Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) in Samarahan.

“Therefore, we are urging the state government to establish two depots in both of these areas to better prepare for potential floods.

“With the establishment of functional depots, similar to warehouses, we can stock a variety of necessities, including not only dry food but also items such as mattresses, pillows, blankets, and more,” she said.

She said this following an inspection of the readiness to face the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) flood disaster at Dewan Sinaran, Kpg Sg Lumut today (Dec 30).

Fatimah also noted that JKMS has already distributed supplies to 29 front-end bases in the state, especially targeting rural residents.

“This proactive preparation involves supplying necessities to those in remote areas and individuals affected by road closures.

“Our primary goal is to ensure a seamless distribution of food to disaster victims, preventing any disruptions in supplies due to the disaster,” she added.

Furthermore, she mentioned that appointed community leaders and village elders will collaborate with JKMS to deliver aid directly to the homes of flood victims.

“We are cognizant that some individuals have faced disruptions in their food supplies due to mobility challenges, and this initiative is part of our response to address such situations,” she added.
