MIRI (Sept 18): State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin has called upon local authorities (PBT) to adopt more practical designs for public park facilities, ensuring materials and equipment installed are less prone to theft and vandalism.

During a visit to Phase 3 of Tudan Recreational Park, which cost RM100,000 and was completed on Sept 4, the Senadin assemblyman said safety and vandalism prevention must be key considerations when designing and constructing public facilities.

“Many existing facilities are impractical as the equipment installed can be easily stolen or damaged. Local authorities need to consider designs that may prevent vandalism and safety concerns.

“Do not use designs that may look pleasing but can easily be stolen, such as plastic rubbish bins.

“If possible, use concrete as the material to make rubbish bins as they are longer lasting and cannot be easily stolen,” he told reporters when met yesterday.

Moreover, Lee also called upon contractors to utilise rust-resistant screws in the installation of future outdoor facilities.

He said he had received complaints of rusted screws causing equipment, particularly in children’s playgrounds, to loosen or break.

“This is a serious safety issue, especially when its concerns children’s safety in public parks,” he added.
