MIRI (Oct 15): Collective efforts by the government and society are necessary towards addressing rising cases of abuse, neglect and sexual harassment of children through a comprehensive Child Protection Advocacy Programme.

In pointing this out, Minister of Transport Sarawak Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said he had received various reports and data related to the socio-economy of the people, which also provided an overview of the factors that could contribute to the rise in child abuse and neglect cases.

“The data shows that the most vulnerable groups are those who from low socio-economic backgrounds.

“Therefore, we need to redouble our efforts towards ensuring that aid and protection would reach all levels of society, especially those who need it the most,” he said in his speech, read out by Councillor Jeffry Phang who represented the minister at the opening of the ‘Miri Division Child Protection Advocacy Programme: Love for Children’ at SK Merbau Miri today.

Lee, the assemblyman for Senadin, also said the community should be aware that this issue was not only related to law and enforcement, but also a matter of community awareness and the roles of all individuals.

“Advocacy, education and collective action can ensure that children are protected from any form of exploitation and neglect, and given the opportunity, they deserve to reach their full potential.”

On the children’s advocacy programme, Lee highlighted its core objective of raising greater awareness of child protection among all parties, particularly students – the very group that were exposed to the threat of abuse and neglect.

“One of the main objectives of this programme is to ensure that children understand their rights and know what actions to take if they or their friends are faced with any form of abuse.”

The state minister also hailed the programme as ‘a platform to inform parents and teachers about the proper channel to forward their complaints of any abuse case.

“Do not be afraid to speak up if you feel insecure or face any problems.

“Always remember that there are many who are ready to help you, including the teachers, parents and the authorities,” he added.
