Minister extends condolences to family of murdered Sarawakian student

KUCHING: Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah expressed her condolences to the family of the late Nur Farah Kartini Abdullah, a 25-year-old student from Miri, who was found murdered in Perak on July 15.

The Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister urged anyone with information about the murder to come forward to help expedite the investigation.

“I expressed my sympathy to the family because losing a family member is never easy.

“I hope the family stays strong during this difficult time,” she said during a press conference after chairing a meeting on the Senior Citizen Health Benefits (SCHB) at BaitulMakmur II Building here today (July 18).

Nur Farah was reported missing after delivering a rental car to a customer in Taman Universiti, Tanjung Malim, Perak on July 11.

She was last seen wearing blue corporate attire, a headscarf, and black slacks.

On July 15, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan announced that a body found at an oil plantation in Kampung Sri Kledang around 6pm was believed to be hers.

A man, believed to be Nur Farah’s boyfriend and the prime suspect in the case, has been remanded for seven days to assist in the investigation.

On July 16, police confirmed that the suspect is a 26-year-old policeman with the rank of Corporal from the Slim River police station.

Meanwhile, the murder of Nur Farah has prompted Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri to say, “No woman should ever go through this.”

Nancy, together with the officials from the National Welfare Foundation, the Social Welfare Department and counsellors met Nur Farah’s mother, siblings and other family members at Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) on July 17.

She said a RM300 immediate assistance from JKM and a RM3,000 grant from PEKA YKN (Family Welfare Scheme for Victims) were handed over to the bereaved family.

Nancy, when contacted, said the family was accommodated at UPSI’s guest house, with a vehicle provided for their transportation needs.

“On behalf of Sarawak, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to UPSI for their support in assisting the family of the deceased.

“I also thank all parties who have helped alleviate the burden of the family. May your kindness be blessed by Allah SWT,” she added.
