KUCHING (Sept 21): Sarawak should capitalise on the spillover benefits of China’s advancements in large-scale construction and technological development to enhance its infrastructure and resolve technical issues, said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
He noted the involvement of Chinese contracting companies in large-scale infrastructure has significantly improved the lives of Sarawakians as well as boosted the state’s economy.
“Presently, while countries around the world face the challenge of saturating economic markets, Sarawak’s market still holds a great deal of untapped potential.
“As a result, many international companies, including Chinese firms, are coming to Sarawak to seek business opportunities and invest in setting up factories,” he said.
His speech was delivered by Deputy Transport Minister Dato Henry Harry Jinep at the Malaysia-China Diplomatic Relations 50th anniversary and Mid-Autumn Festival commemorative dinner at Seafood Shangri-La, Cityone Megamall on Friday.
Tiong urged Chinese business organisations, particularly the Malaysia-China Import and Export Chamber of Commerce in Kuching and Sarawak to seize this opportunity by actively participating in trade cooperation across various sectors and promoting greater economic collaboration between Sarawak and China.
He also highlighted Sarawak’s ventures into the global green economy and its success in multiple fields through cooperation with China, citing the hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rail Transit project in Kuching as a milestone in Malaysia-China collaboration as the first region outside of China to adopt this zero-emission public transport system.
Tiong also commended the Malaysia-China Import and Export Chamber of Commerce in Kuching and Sarawak for promoting trade exchange between both regions, which not only enhanced economic exchange but significantly contributed to the rapport between Sarawak and China.
